Pastoral Staff



For more than 38 years Aubrey Maye has served with distinction as the Senior Pastor of Azalea Garden Church. During his tenure, Pastor Maye along with his wife Marian, have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the Great Commission both at home and abroad through their leadership of local benevolence ministries as well as an expansive world missions ministry. Under their leadership, Azalea Garden has distinguished itself as a congregation who places the highest priority upon reaching the lost for the cause of Christ.

In addition to his service as pastor, Aubrey has served the Church of God in numerous other leadership positions. He has served on the State Council of the Church of God in Virginia on multiple occasions. He is a former member of the Church of God World Missions Board and was a pioneer in the International Evangelism Department. In 1994 Aubrey was elected to serve the first of two consecutive terms on the Executive Council of the Church of God. In addition to these leadership roles, Pastor Maye has influenced the lives of countless ministers and church leaders through a lifetime of ministerial integrity and a vision for world evangelism.

Both Aubrey and Marian are graduates of Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. They have been married for nearly 46 years and are the proud parents of three sons and daughters-n-law who have blessed them with five grandchildren.







Dr. Rodney and Angela Vickers came to Azalea Garden Church in August of 2006 after serving a four-year stint as a hospice chaplain in North Carolina. In addition to his ministry as a chaplain, Rodney has served the Church of God as an evangelist, church planter and senior pastor. Both Rodney and Angela are graduates of Lee University. Rodney has gone on to complete his Master of Divinity from the Church of God Theological Seminary and has recently completed his Doctorate of Ministry in Marriage and Family Therapy from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Rodney currently serves our church as the Executive Pastor. As part of his duties, he oversees the day to day operations of the church, supervises the pastoral and office staffs, and regularly teaches a weekly Bible study during our Wednesday evening Family Night service. Rodney and Angela are the proud parents of two sons, Andrew and William, and one Golden Retriever, Samson.






 

After graduating from Lee University in 1973, Larry and Becky McMasters moved to Norfolk to serve as teachers at the Azalea Garden Christian School. Since that time Larry and Becky have served in many areas of ministry in both the school and the church. In 1986 Larry assumed the role of Youth Pastor. Under his leadership, the youth ministry of Azalea Garden grew to an average weekly attendance of more than 100 teens. In addition to his local youth ministry, Larry has served as a member of the State Youth Board for Virginia on multiple occasions and was instrumental in the founding of the Premier Winterfest which meets annually in Ocean City, Maryland.

In 1987 Larry took on an additional role serving as the Principal of Azalea Garden Christian School and now currently serves as its Superintendent. After the church relocated to Virginia Beach, Larry and Becky were selected to return to Norfolk as Pastor of a satellite congregation in 2001, and they continue to serve in that capacity to this day. In addition to assisting Larry in leading the church in Norfolk, Becky also serves as the Principal of Azalea Garden Christian School. Larry and Becky are the proud parents of their daughter, Yolanda (husband, Rick), and the prouder grandparents of their granddaughters, Brenan and Larissa.

 





James Coulter along with his wife Heather and their daughter Hannah came to Azalea Garden in July 2008 to serve as our Pastor of Worship and the Arts. Prior to coming to Azalea Garden, the Coulters served as musical evangelists and traveled all over the United States leading congregations into the Lord's presence through worship in song. In addition to serving as musical evangelists, James and Heather have also served as university vocal instructors, vocal performance judges at competitions at the local, state, and national levels, vocal and choral clinicians at numerous worship conferences, and guest vocalists on TBN and INSP programs across the nation. Throughout the course of his ministry, James has been privileged to minister alongside such notable Christian artists as Ron Kenoly, Alvin Slaughter, The Hoppers, and Karen Wheaten just to name a few.

Both James and Heather are graduates of Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, and have been actively involved in music ministry for more than a decade. But beyond their musical talents and considerable experience, James and Heather possess a sincere passion for the presence of God and a deep desire to witness the ignition of this same passion in the lives of others. They are certainly a welcomed addition to the pastoral staff at Azalea Garden Church.

 





Dr. John and Yvonne Wagner joined the staff of Azalea Garden Church in 2009 to serve as the Senior Adult Pastor and Pastoral Care Director. John and Yvonne also reach out to the military in our community by providing a home away from home for young servicemen and women.

John is a retired Navy Chaplain, has served as a church planter, an itinerate personal evangelist, and as an adjunct college professor. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Bible College and his Masters of Divinity from Assemblies of God Graduate School in Springfield, Missouri; and earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA. He is the author of "How To Become A More Effective Personal Witness" and "Open Bible Ministries, Inc: A Home Away From Home for Military Men and Women: A Case Study".

John and Yvonne have two daughters, Sarah and Elizabeth; a son-in-law, Brian; and one very cute grandson, Jacob Benjamin.






Pastor Gloria Dudley has served Azalea Garden in a variety of capacities but is perhaps most noted for her dynamic ability to preach and teach the Gospel. Her ministry in the Word has opened many doors to preach in such venues as ladies conferences, Bible schools both in the U.S and abroad, churches and various jail ministries. Gloria currently serves Azalea Garden as Special Events Coordinator. In addition to her role as a member of the pastoral staff, Gloria is a regular teacher of adult Bible classes and assists in coordinating the schedule for adult classes for the Wednesday Family Night service.

Gloria is a licensed minister in the Church of God and is well known in numerous denominational circles in Hampton Roads. Gloria, along with her husband Tom, owned and operated Dudley's Christian Bookstores in Norfolk and Virginia Beach for more than 30 years. Gloria and Tom reside in Virginia Beach and they are the proud aunt and uncle of many nieces and nephews and are loved by all whom their lives have touched.






Bonnie Beninati Self has been a part of Azalea Garden Church since 1985. She moved here after graduating from East Coast Bible College in Charlotte, NC with a B.S. in Elementary Education and began working at Azalea Garden Christian School. After starting a family, she was a stay at home mom but continued to volunteer in several areas of the church which include Sunday School teacher, Nursery and Toddler Church Director, Girl's Club teacher, Children's Choir Director, and Children's Church Director.

After the death of her husband, Jim Beninati, in 2001, Bonnie became a licensed minister with the Church of God. She also enrolled at Regent University where she pursued her Masters Degree in Special Education. In addition, she was hired as the first Children's Pastor for Azalea Garden Church. Currently, part of Bonnie's duties include overseeing Children's Church, Junior Kids Church, Toddler Church and Nursery, and the Girl's and Boy's Clubs.

Bonnie remarried in June 2009. She has a beautiful family which includes her husband Steve, Julie, Amy, Jared, Kenan and Cameron.

 




Pastor Gladys Ashmore, her husband Greg, and daughter Hillary have recently joined the Azalea Garden family in January 2009. She currently serves as the Pastor of our Virginia Beach Hispanic congregation, "Vino Nuevo". Prior to coming to Azalea Garden, Gladys served in her native country of Honduras, as a missionary to the Miskito Indians. She also served as the pastor of a bilingual church (Miskito and Spanish), and as the regional educational director, training more than 25 local pastors in that region. Gladys has also served as pastor for an English speaking congregation on her native island Roatan, and as the territorial educational director for the eastern territory of Honduras.






At the age of nine Pastor Bill gave his life to the Lord at a Church camp which he attended with Azalea Garden. Throughout his teenage years, Pastor Bill was heavily involved in his youth group. He participated in nearly any and all available youth events including several missions and ministry trips, discipleship courses, and weekly youth services. As a senior in high school, Bill experienced a brief bump in his relationship with the Lord but after a short time reestablished his commitment to follow Christ, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and received the call the ministry. He spent a year at a local community college. After that Pastor Bill attended Master's Commission (Roanoke) where he spent two years training and studying for ministry. During the last part of his second year at Masters Commission, Pastor Bill interned as a youth Pastor at a local church. He has been youth pastoring ever since.

Pastor Bill is 28 years old January 31, 2009 He is a licensed minister in the church of God and has a Bachelors degree from Regent University. He has had the opportunity to minister to teenagers throughout the state of Virginia as well as in California, Romania, and Honduras. Pastor Bill is crazy about Jesus. He also enjoys playing sports, exercising, running watching movies, hanging out with friends, and dating his girlfriend. He is also a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan.
